WWA appeals for US$2500 to purchase lab equipment for gorilla-human research approach incorporating public health, community education and engagement

A new call is active for the purchase of laboratory equipment for the study of zoonotic diseases shared by gorillas and people. For an animal as genetically close to humans as the mountain gorilla (we share 98.4% of our genetic material), our interconnectedness is more than an ecological concept; it’s a daily reality. Human communities and gorilla groups live in close proximity around the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, sharing landscapes, water resources and unfortunately some diseases as well.

Based in Uganda, the Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) team works to protect the Mountain Gorillas of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park through a ground-breaking integrated human, animal and ecosystem ‘One Health’ approach comprising:

  • Wildlife conservation with a focus on wildlife health

  • Community and livestock health in the villages around the protected areas

  • Development of alternative livelihoods from eco-tourism for previously impoverished rural local people living around the protected areas

In 2025 WWA raised over $13,000 to fund the purchase of a GeneXpert Machine for Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH), working with gorillas in the Impenetrable Rain Forests of Bwindi, Uganda.

This year CTPH approached WWA with further laboratory equipment items on their wishlist, including a thermal cycler, ELISA microplate reader and washer, pH meters, autoclave and more.
