WWA Big Five Appeal funds 7 trail cameras for Cheetah Outreach

WWA Big Five Appeal funds 7 trail cameras for Cheetah Outreach Trust to assist vital re-introduction and monitoring work with endangered cheetah

Superb donations to our Big Five Drive Appeal in 2023 from four of our main supporters Nova Wild, Hemker Park and Zoo, The Kuzo Group and Rae Safaris and from many private donors enabled WWA to support conservation and research projects for five selected species across five countries.

This included the purchase of seven trail cameras to support the Cheetah Outreach Trust in the vital post-release monitoring of cheetah in their new locations after being darted and transported from areas where they were in conflict with local farmers.

From an estimated 100,000 cheetahs at the turn of the 20th century the global population is currently thought to be a mere 6-7000 individuals due to shrinking habitat, dwindling of natural prey and conflict with urbanisation, agriculture and other human activity. Just over 1300 of these live in South Africa, where approximately 500 are free-roaming on farmlands in the northern part of the country. For over twenty years, the primary goal of the Cheetah Outreach Trust has been the conservation and promotion of the co-existence of these free-roaming cheetah. Working hand-in-hand with livestock and game farming communities Cheetah Outreach seeks to manage and overcome the conflicts that arise for farmers in the vital need to preserve the endangered cheetah in their shared space.

In addition, the Trust has a very well-regarded curriculum-linked education program at the Cheetah Outreach facility in the Cape Town area and works with local and international academic institutions to initiate research projects focused on the conservation of cheetah on farmland areas in South Africa.

Worth Wild Africa has been delighted to assist with the multi-faceted and vital work of the Trust and once again, would like to thank our amazing supporters for their super generosity and dedication to helping conserve the beautiful, iconic cheetah in the wild.
