WWA raises funds to combat the risks of fire induced by climate change
Helping to keep Loziba ahead of the Flames – a vital preparation to protect and preserve conservation and communities.
WWA appeals for US$2,500 to purchase innovative, water-saving firefighting equipment and critical safety gear for Loziba Wildlife Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Located in the Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany biodiversity hotspot, Loziba Wildlife Reserve faces an escalating threat of climate-driven wildfires. This vast 8,500-hectare landscape is classified as a high-hazard area, with a greater than 50% chance of being hit by a significant destructive fire each year. As climate change increases the frequency and intensity of these events, the reserve’s vital conservation work and the communities it supports are now at constant risk.
Loziba’s remote location means that self-reliance is a necessity, not a choice. Currently, the firefighting team faces this increasing danger with basic hand tools. They lack formal training, established safety protocols, and even fundamental Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as fire-retardant clothing, proper boots, or radios to coordinate efforts. This critical gap gravely threatens the irreplaceable wildlife, including a recently established herd of 30 and more elephants, endangering the lives of the rangers who manage the reserve and threatens all of the surrounding communities and their livestock that depend on this ecosystem.
To address this threat, Loziba is partnering with Inner Group, a team of disaster response experts, to pioneer an innovative, community-focused fire-fighting model. A key part of the project is the introduction of GreenCAFS, a low-cost, water-efficient firefighting system that is specially designed for use in remote water-scarce environments. This technology uses an environmentally friendly foam that requires 80% less water than traditional methods of fighting fires and will enable the team to contain fires faster and more effectively, while protecting the environment.
Worth Wild Africa is proud to support this forward-thinking project, which addresses the often over-looked but critical conservation issue of wildfire management. Your support will help build a structured and professional wildfire response capability at Loziba for the first time, a benchmark for others to follow in a world increasingly impacted by the effects of climate change.
Let’s keep ahead of the flames and protect this wildlife hotspot from becoming perilously much hotter.
